Re:Recommend a book - 2008/03/24 20:01 What about "A girl named Disaster" by Nancy Farmer - powerful and makes interesting use of local mythology - (also her "The Ear, the Eye and the Arm" - but not an Africa of today; rather a dystopian future).

Re:Recommend a book - 2008/03/24 21:34 Thanks for recommendation Ferelith. Not one that I know but I've just purchased a second hand copy on Amazon.

I have to recommend Sarah Mussi's The Door of No ReturnThis novel won the Glen Dimplex Award and is quite exceptional.

I'm about to start her second novel The Last of the Warrior Kings.

Re:Recommend a book - 2008/03/26 15:03 "We all went on safari" by Laurie Krebs has wonderful illustrations of animals and life in rural Tanzania, and teaches the reader to count to 10 in Swahili!

Re:Recommend a book - 2008/03/27 09:22 Journey to Jo'burg by Beverly Naidoo is a super book dealing with what life was like for a typical black family in South Africa during the apartheid years.
Also by Beverly Naidoo - The Great Tug of War - a series of charming African fables about Mmutla the hare who is always one step ahead of the other animals.
Christophe's Story is a very thoughtful and moving story about a Rwandan refugee who has moved to the UK.
For older pupils (upper KS2/KS3) I would recommend The Garbage King by Elizabeth Laird which offers a realistic look at the tough life of children living in poverty in Ethiopa.
Also I am a Cloud, I can Blow Anywhere by Jonathon and Shirley Tulloch, a story about Mulumbe whose grandmother teaches her about the wisdom of her ancestors and who embarks on a dangerous journey to save her family.
