Spelling and writing - 2008/10/01 19:19 Hi
I have a year 5 class in this my NQT year. I have noticed that many of my children are poor spellers in their writing. I want to do something outside of the literacy lesson to encourage good spelling and better writing in general. I need to find a challenge/project that will interest/inspire both boys and girls.

Any ideas?
I was thinking of penpals.
Writing to an author.
Does anyone have anything more inspiring?

I had a spelling challenge for Y3s that ran over half a term, where I created a 3-fold Publisher leaflet with lists of key words that the children often mis-spelled. They were arranged into groups of ten with, as far as possible, common patterns, so there were 'ould' words for instance, 'wh' words and those with apostrophes. I shared various ways to help the chldren learn and remember the words , had a lesson a week to go over them, and had a final test at the end of the half-term. I made an extra challenge for those who were good spellers already, so that all could see some progress. It worked really well.

My advice is first of all to look diagnostically at the children's spelling. What do they know and what do they find difficult? It is likely that the poor spellers have a range of different needs. Some may, for instance, over rely on phonic strategies. On the other hand, some may have auditory diffculties that result in poor phonic translation. Whn you've identified the pattern of difficulties, you can then group the children according to need and do some deeper work, developing the strategies that will enable them to become better at spelling.

It appears that they each have a variety of problems but mainly they are not sounding the words or breaking them down before they have a go. I am setting up some specific spelling lessons to give them some guidelines on what to do when they struggle with a word and how to sound/break it down. I do have quite a wide range of spelling abilities in my class so I think smaller more focused groups is the way forward. Thanks for the heads up on the book I will see if I can get hold of it.

I know you are looking for something outside of your daily literacy lesson but a school I am working with this year are doing 5-10 minute oral/mental spelling starters at the start of each lesson. They are using a range of simple activities and games which are really engaging all the learners in their class. They are using Jumpstart Literacy by Pie Corbett for some of the activities. If your class are struggling with phonics try looking at Letters and Sounds - phase 5. Phase 6 has ideas for teaching spelling.
