Re:Help! - 2008/06/12 09:45 Hi Emma,
Of course there's that wonderful Miss Trunchbull in Matilda. Well worth a read.

Re:Help! - 2008/06/12 10:04 Pasted here for Diana Barnes as left in a separate strand:

There's a really lovely and supportive headteacher in Sally Grindley's "Saving Finnegan", about a whale stranded on a Scottish island and its impact on a little girl, her school and her community.

Re:Help! - 2008/06/12 14:33 Gosh - loads

The Chalet School has four heads - Madge Bettany, Mlle LePattre (variable spelling, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson - and there are over 50 novels.

~What Katy Did at School (Coolidge) has Miss Florence and the rather unpleasant Miss Nipson and the benefit of being set in 19th century America

Antonia Forest's Marlowe Novels have a school element with a very interesting Head mistress who is the aunt of a pupil (You might try Ann Piling's Big Pink which explores a similar relationship) - Autumn Term, Cricket Term, Attic Term and The End of Term. These can be a bit tricky to find but have been republished by Girls Gone By if you can't get them from a library.

Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables) also becomes a head teacher in Anne of Windy Willows having started off as a pupil in 'Green Gables) - a north american setting again.

I'd go with the Forest books if you're pushed for time - they are the most interesting school stories I've ever read (and I've read a lot) and show clearly the difference between a pupil and a teacher's experiences of school. Do contact Girls Gone By as well - they are real experts on School stories!

Re:Help! - 2008/06/13 00:21 You could also look at "A swarm in May" (Mayne) and the two other Cathedral stories by him - Mr Ardent is an attractive Head
An there is a rather nasty specimen (I think) in Ibbotson's "Star of Kazan" - and a gloriously "liberal" one in her "Dragonfly Pool".
I cannot remember id any heads feature in the stories of Janet McNeil but they might be worth checking.
