Books on bullying! - 2008/06/23 14:41 Hi
I'd like to find some books aimed at 9-12 age group where child characters overcome bullies - preferably not by magic!!
All my trawls on the Internet seem to come up with are self-help type things and I am looking for fiction. Can anyone recommend any good ones?
Thanks

Re:Books on bullying! - 2008/06/23 19:39 Hi Barbara

Have you read Nicky Singer's Feather Boy?

I wrote some notes for the book which can be accessed on the Booktrust website

Re:Books on bullying! - 2008/06/24 10:59 Thank you Nikki, this looks ideal!
Best wishes
Barbara
PS If any knows of any similar with a girl protagonist, that would be helpful too.

Re:Books on bullying! - 2008/06/24 12:11 I can think of a couple off the top of my head, although two of the three have protagonists in their mid-teens...

Start, though, with Jacqueline Wilson's Bad Girls.

The other two are Getting Rid of Karenna (now republished as Saturday Girl) by helena Pielichaty, and Jigsaw by Carol Hedges - but beware this last one; the bully commits suicide, and the novel is the story of one of his victim's attempts to find out why.

Hope this helps.

Re:Books on bullying! - 2008/06/24 12:51 Here's Darren Coult's review for Julia Jarman's Hangman

I also found some other titles using the advance search facility (see lefthand navigation) and typing 'bullying' into the theme field.

Best wishes,
Nikki
