Shining On

This collection of short stories contains stories by ten of the most popular authors writing for young people today. Contributors are: Malorie Blackman, Melvyn Burgess, Meg Cabot, Anne Fine, Cathy Hopkins, Sue Limb, Celia Rees, Meg Rosoff, Rosie Rushton and Jacqueline Wilson. The authors have donated their stories for publication in this book and Piccadilly Press and CosmoGIRL! are donating royalties from the sale of the book to Teenage Cancer Trust. The blurb states that these stories have been ‘hand picked by readers of CosmoGIRL!’ and that they ‘explore the highs and lows of being a teenager’.

Review:The themes in this collection are varied. Parents’ relationships, boyfriend trouble, family roles, disfigurement and love, coming out, understanding the myth about a dead sister are just some of them. Most of the stories are written in the first person and as such have a voice that readers of CosmoGirl! would recognise. However, these are not magazine ephemera- type stories, they can be returned to and provide a starting point for discussion or further reading.

The two stories that move beyond the first person are rather different in their themes. One, 'Calling all Cats' by Celia Rees is a ghost story, while 'You’re a Legend' by Sue Limb takes the reader back in time to when today’s grannies were rockers who sometimes made the front pages of the newspapers. This is a readable teen collection which would probably appeal more to a female readership.
