First Things First

First published in 1988, this delightful compendium for babies and toddlers in picturebook format includes the alphabet, colours and numbers, and rhymes (both nursery and nonsense), in Voake’s instantly recognisable style. Reissued with a new cover. This is an excellent book to share with a toddler, with Voake’s “freewheeling calligraphy” describing and accompanying the wonderful pictures. For example, after “1,2,3,4,5, once I caught a fish alive”, the facing page is filled with three very different pictures of fish: a long thin wiggly fish, a stripy fish and a flat green spotty fish- and there are nonsense rhymes like the Purple Cow. Tremendous fun, and the child is learning at the same time…
