Every night, when their daddies tuck them in, Little Knight dreams of fierce knight-eating dragons whilst Little Dragon dreams of dangerous dragon-slaying knights. One stormy night they make an astonishing discovery and after that night-time in the time of knights and dragons will never be the same again! This wonderful story is perfect for bedtime reading with little ones and has the additional allure of fold-out flaps along with other surprises, on the pages, in the text and in the illustration so tired little eyes may need to remain alert, not necessarily a great recommendation for bedtime but this is such a gentle book that it is sure to encourage sweet dreams of heroism!
The bedtime practices of Little Dragon and Little Knight are almost identical so the reader can follow them across the pages. These vary from double page spreads where the text and illustration run straight across to single pages where a more traditional layout is favoured. The story should also be followed through the illustration and up and down the changing fonts of the text, designed to fit the descriptive words.
The illustration is bright yet at the same time gentle and comforting, showing Little Knight and Little Dragon as lovely cuddly characters. Whilst each of them has dreams about the other they are perhaps not as brave as one might expect, yet when circumstances contrive to bring them together there is a surprising outcome.
The story has a moral tale for older readers and is a gentle fairy tale for younger ones. There is lots of detail hidden in the artwork - how quickly can you spot the owls hiding in the woods and is it my imagination or do their eyes move and watch you read? The language is simple, the amount of text minimal yet the story is effective and enchanting. After reading this to little ones it is likely that both playtime and bedtime will be entirely different and I would be surprised if it does not become a favourite!
