Sara Crew is a lucky little girl - not only is she rich and pampered by a kind and loving father, but she is also blessed with a sweet nature, a lively intelligence, and the gift of making friends wherever she goes. Her luck is about to change however when, after a few years of separation at a classy finishing school in London, Sara learns that the diamond mine her father has invested in, far from making her even richer and happier, has bankrupted and killed her father...
Now Sara is an orphan, and dependant on the cruel and vindictive headmistress Miss Minchin for her livelihood. Forced to live in a rat-infested attic and work in the kitchen for free, Sara is hungry, cold, tired and unloved - will no one rescue the little princess?
This has been one of my favorite stories since I was small, and it is bound to remain a classic as long as little girls like reading inspirational stories about other little girls. Although the story may seem a bit dated, it has all the charm of nostalgia, and the timeless elements of a fairy tale. I especially like this new edition - the illustrations are lovely line drawings which add to the 'classic' feel, and the added material at the end of the volume is a nioce idea, although perhaps a bit simplistic for older readers. This volume is a good choice for the school library. A lovely edition which I highly recommend.
