Synopsis: Here's a little poem is a superb selection of over sixty poems by a range of English and American writers. Affectionately describing the early experiences of young children, from getting up in the morning and enjoying the adventures of the day, to drifting off to sleeping at night, this is a warm, imaginative world of first encounters.
Review:This is a gorgeous first poetry book to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek Peters have chosen a wide variety of poems, both old and new. Over sixty poems have been included from a wide variety of poets, ranging from A.A. Milne and Hillaire Belloc to Wendy Cope and Roger McGough. In fact fifty different poets have poems in this anthology. The book is divided into four sections which cover everyday events in the life of a young child - Me, myself and I, Who lives in my house, I go outside and Time for bed. Ranging from comic and absurd to cosy and gentle, the poems have been chosen with care to enchant young children.
Polly Dunbar’s illustrations are a delight. Bright and exuberant, they capture the spirit of the book beautifully.
Whether sharing one-to-one or with a group, Here’s a Little Poem is a wonderful first introduction to poetry. It is a book to instil a love of poetry in young children and to treasure. A real must for every home and nursery.
