Synopsis: Mad stuff just happens with Billy Bonkers! Billy is a bouncy, bubbly, bonkers boy. And wherever he goes, off-the-wall adventures always seem to follow. From bouncing so hard on his trampoline that he bounces up, up and away...into space, and eating so much porridge his stomach puffs up and he floats into the garden tree (and gets stuck...until he burps anyway), to a flight on a deflating lilo to biff a big, vicious shark right on the nose! Along with his wacky dad, brainy sister and down-to-earth mum, Billy embarks on a life that is never boring, it's bonkers!
Review: Billy Bonkers is a set of three stories about the antics of a boy who just can’t stop bouncing. Young boys and girls will love the slapstick nature of this world where Billy eats so much dry porridge that he swells up and shoots over his house. His wacky dad, brainy sister and practical mother accept that Billy is a loveable, bouncy child that can’t keep still. Quite often they are only too happy to join in on Billy’s wacky adventures.
My only concern is the adult jokes that seem to have crept into some of the stories. When Billy’s Dad starts to go red as he ogles a group of bikini clad girls playing volleyball on the beach, the child focus wobbles too much for my liking. The most enjoyable tale of the three is The Birthday Trampoline story, because the story stays firmly with Billy. And Nick Sharratt’s marvellous illustrations really do multiply the fun for young readers.
