Review: This picture book, by Margaret and H.A Rey is one of a number of Curious George titles. In this particular story, George is very curious when he discovers many party items and the reader is kept hanging on until the end to find out who the actual party is for. The context of the story will delight children and it contains many features that will promote learning. For example, there are frequently opportunities for prediction as some pages end with a question or ellipses, encouraging the reader to turn over and discover what happens next. The storyline allows the book to be used as a basis for sequencing activities and it could also promote children’s counting skills as many of the illustrations contain a number of items (e.g. balloons, flowers etc.). The book would be best suited to individual/paired reading as the text is quite small. Overall therefore I think that this book has a lot of characteristics which will make it enjoyable and interesting for children to read.
