Nightrise

Synopsis: The third and best yet in the Power of Five series, which Horowitz is rewriting. Nightrise takes up the story of Jamie and Scott Tyler, two more gatekeepers, about a week before Evil Star ends. The story switches from Peru, to Reno, USA. The boys do not know that they are two of the five, but unfortunately Nightrise does. The powerful organisation which exists to serve the Old Ones, moves against them. Scott is captured and brain washed. Jamie is on the run, wanted for two murders he has not committed, searching for his twin. When Jamie is shot escaping Nightrise people, he finds himself transported 10,000 years into the past. He is present at the final battle against the Old Ones that took place at Raven's Gate. He is one of the original five.

Review: Nightrise is a fast-paced, action-packed story. It is a compelling thriller. Paul Panting, reader of the two previous audio books in the series, reads parts of this story too. He takes the chapter headings, the dreams and the scenes in Hong Kong and at Raven's Gate. The American sections of the story - the majority of the narrative, is read by Canadian actor Kerry Shale. Shale has appeared in many films and has lived in London since 1978. He has a comfortable, gravelly voice to listen to and performs the different voices of the characters brilliantly. Paul Panting's British English makes a refreshing change from time to time. The shared narration works extremely well. Key moments of the story and breaks in narrative are highlighted by snatches of eerie music. This is a fantastic production of an exciting story and I thoroughly recommend it.
