Women, Art, and Society

Synopsis: This is the third edition to a detailed exploration of women and their contributions to visual culture throughout history.

Review: This is a challenging book. It is often a set text at undergraduate level and is invaluable for anyone studying art history or cultural studies. I found it fascinating.  It is very up-to-date, with the last two chapters concentrating on the 1990s and 2000-2006. The wealth of illustrations and contextual detail is simply staggering, but this is a book written  for the beginning academic rather than as professional support for  the art teacher or the pupil. It is above the level of any text a secondary art teacher would  use in a lesson; indeed, it’s possibly too daunting for an A2 student. If a teacher has read it closely, then they could guide a very able student to relevant parts in the book. Nevertheless a fascinating read for art teachers wanting to extend their personal knowledge and understanding.
