Synopsis: One day the front door bell rang and Polly went to open the door. And there was a great black wolf who said he had come to eat her up. He was quite surprised when Polly said she didn't want to be eaten.
Review: This was a fantastic and amusing read. Halfway through I remembered reading this as a child and was inspired to go away and read other titles by Catherine Storr that I had also read as a child. The twelve stories about Polly's adventures with the wolf show the resourcefulness of both Polly and the wolf. You know that Polly is too clever to be eaten by the wolf but you still pity him in his failure and admire his inventiveness. Polly is down to earth and practical pointing out the flaws in the wolf's plans but helping him when he is in trouble. We have multiple copies of this in school and I am considering using this for guided reading with a mixed Year 3/4 class. There are many twists on original fairy tales that can be explored.
