Once Upon a Picnic

Synopsis:What could be more boring for a small boy than a quiet picnic in the woods with no one to play with? Mum and Dad just sit and stare, although there's nothing to see - well, except a troll, three bears, a gingerbread man, a wolf, a witch ...

Review: Written in a similar vein to Each Peach Pear Plum, this book introduces children to a whole host of traditional story characters. The images prompt lots of talk about what is going on beyond the text. It introduces simple inference and deduction skills, encouraging young children to talk about the events of stories with which  they already have some knowledge. I did not find that the text flowed very smoothly but it does introduce rhyming pattern and many key words.

Overall, this is a delightful book that all young children will enjoy and will make an excellent teaching resource in the early years.
