Why are people terrorists?

Synopsis: This book is part of a series of “Why” books which offer insight into problems of the 20th Century which may be of interest to young people. It offers a no nonsense approach and allows the reader to make up their own mind as to whether this is really an answerable question.

Review: Quite a lofty title was my first impression! Most adults really don’t understand the answer to this one and would probably do well to have a look at this one for some ideas, in case an inquisitive child asks them the question.

Predictably, but sensibly, the book starts with defining and charting the history of the topic. However all sorts of other aspects are covered too – terrorism and the media, political and religious reasons. All of the topics are accompanied by Case Studies which provide perfect examples for GCSE Citizenship studies. Other colourful spreads cover financing of terrorism, methods used and what is being done to protect us from the threat of terrorism. The latter is reassuring and helps us make sense of airport security measures and what role the United Nations is playing. The book has useful “fact boxes” and weblinks” leading the reader to other sources that will extend understanding and knowledge. A useful Glossary at the back also offers simple definitions. The final chapter looks ahead – to the prospect of increased “Cyber Terrorism” and the way that terrorism might develop in the future. Not the cheeriest of reads – but that was clear from the title.

This book is fair and balanced, offering a straightforward explanation of a very complex issue. It would certainly tempt me to look at some of the other titles in the series: Why do people bully? Why do people abuse human rights? Why do people join gangs? and many more. All of these topics are relevant to the Citizenship, General Studies and RE areas.
