Grizzly Dad

Everyone knows that sometimes dads can be grumpy and grouchy and grizzly... But what would YOU do if your dad turned into a great big grizzly bear? Open this book to find out what it is like to have a real Grizzly Dad!

This story book explains to its reader why dads are great (even the grumpy ones). Have you ever woken up in a grizzly mood? We all do, some of us more often than others and no doubt parents even more often than that! But how often, Dad’s, has your grizzly mood transformed you into a great big, fun loving grizzly bear? This picturebook not only celebrates the brilliance of Dads it also explains how a bad mood can turn out for the best and provides an insight into the wonderful imagination of children!

When Dad wakes up it is easy to see why he might be in a grizzly mood, after all look at the time! then look at what is being done to him to get him out of bed and then what he has to put up with! Before long he wonders back to bed for some peace, but is there a telltale sign of events to come?

The simple text does not give too much away, children must look into the detail and see what they can spot happening. They will be in for a huge surprise when they see the bear, he is huge! But Bears are as bad as children, which means there is only one thing to do - take them out. The image of a bear driving is encapsulated with the fine pastel colours of the illustration depicting a car going at great speed. The colour  palette is gentle and the pictures, though at times larger than life, are not intimidating,.

Joanna Harrison makes great use of her artistic skills and keeps the words to a minimum, allowing everyone from the youngest reader to enjoy the book. It is ideal for sharing at bedtime with Dad’s but mornings are perhaps best avoided!

A good Father's Day choice.

Fed up with his chaotic household, Dad stumps upstairs “like a bear with a sore head”- and wakes up as a bear. Dad and son have a really good day, and all returns to normal… or does it? Good fun to read aloud. This reviewer has not seen anything written by Joanna Harrison since the charming “Dear bear” (1994) about facing one’s fears, and “When Mum turned into a monster” (1996) much loved by schoolchildren, but now she has been taken on by David Fickling, and offers another amusing literal interpretation of a well-known simile. Dad-as-bear has smelly breath and disgusting manners, but there are advantages, as the boy discovers when they drive into town. (Yes, of course a bear can drive...VRRROOM!). At the end of the day, when Mum and the little ones come home, all seems to be normal again, but the observant reader will notice something not quite right in the last picture… There is a lot of detail to spot in the chaos at the start of the story, imaginative placing of text and size of font (see brackets above) with scope for sound effects and much drama, and the illustrations are simple but fun. This book would be great to share either one-to-one or with a group of children, who will find much to enjoy.
