Tulliver's Tunnel

Synopsis: Tulliver is a little rabbit that hates washing his face. One day, he decides he has had enough, and leaves home to live in a burrow under a big oak tree at the far end of the field. But, when nighttime comes, and Tulliver's burrow is not finished, a very hungry, muddy and miserable rabbit settles down to sleep. Perhaps he isn't ready to leave home after all?

Review: Tulliver is a young bunny sharing a furrow in the woods with his caring mother. His mother makes him wash his face two times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. One day Tulliver feels ready to move out and live his own life. He doesn't want to clean his face anymore and doesn't want to be bossed around. He leaves his mother to move across the prairie and under a tree. Tulliver has to dig and dig, but where he ends up is exactly where he should be.

Tulliver’s Tunnel is a short, pleasant book about realizing the value of parents and what you have at home. The only peril this bunny ever faces is a grumpy badger and sore paws. Younger children will enjoy the quick, pleasant nature of the story. Older children may require more action and be able to see right through the story.

Susan Winter's illustrations are enjoyable but typical to nice stories about bunnies in the woods. The characters are sufficiently fluffy, and little details like passing insects add to the dry, flat colours and landscapes. Diana Reynolds Roome's playful text and Susan Winter's beautiful illustrations make this an ideal book for reading aloud. The lesson of the story isn't altogether clear. This is probably good; you can adapt  it to your own child and situation. Thematically the book deals with love between a mother and a child. The book reads very well aloud, as a guided/group reading text and a great bedtime story!
