The Roar

Twins Mika and Ellie live in a future behind a wall - safe from the plague animals that live on the other side. That is what they have been told. When one of them disappears and the other becomes caught up in a sinister game they begin to discover that their concrete world has been built on lies. A determination to find each other leads them on another quest, for the truth. Ellie has been kidnapped, no matter how Mal Gorman tries to convince her, or himself, otherwise. She is determined to get away, if only to tell her parents and her brother that  she is still alive.

Her parents believe that she is dead, her brother knows otherwise. Ellie and Mika are more powerful than either of them, or even Mal Gorman realises. As twins they have a special bond that has been strengthened by genetic mutation. In their world, behind The Wall, there is darkness, poverty, disease, food shortages and crime. The people have been housed  in concrete towns and lack of space leads to a ban on procreation. . Ellie and Mika are of the first generation of children to be born behind the wall and Mal Gorman knows there is something special about them and that he can harness whatever that may be to help him win the war he is about to rage against those on the other side of the Wall. Revealing what is on the other side would spoil the entire story, but it is a secret so precious that only a few know. Millie is one of them. In a moment of weakness Mal Gorman revealed the truth to her. Mika will soon find out too, but once they know and understand quite how sinister Mal Gorman is will it be too late to stop his evil plans?

Emma Clayton has bought science fiction to a teenage audience with her first novel ‘The Roar’, an accessible, action packed thriller. Many young people are unfamiliar with true science fiction as it is a relatively untapped area of the market for this age group, but Emma’s book will change this, with its futuristic setting, characters who typify the stubbornness of children, computer games, virtual reality, mystery, intrigue and action it takes the reader on a roller-coaster, edge-of-the-seat journey. A compelling and must-read debut novel for the Summer of 2008.

The Roar by Emma Clayton
Reviewed by ra325, 2008-09-01

‘The Roar’ is an action packed, sci-fi debut novel from Emma Clayton bursting to the brim with contemporary issues that leaves you desperate for more. Suspense builds throughout the novel as the reader, along with the main characters, searches for the truth – the elusive ‘secret’. It is incredibly difficult to put down!

What I found most enjoyable about the novel and what, in my opinion, stands it apart from other children’s literature, are the issues that Clayton bravely tackles. The line between reality and virtual reality is thin as gaming turns sinister, while the novel rips into issues of corruption among those in power and media control, for as Mika states of the general public, ‘They’ll believe anything they see on television’. The future of our planet is scary indeed through the imaginative eyes of Clayton who ensures you will never look at animals in the same way again!

A fantastic debut.
