Lily’s life is in ruins. She has a baby sister called Daisy, but Daisy is not just any baby, she is a witch baby and it seems that Lily is the only one who can see this. To make matters worse Daisy has summoned up an invisible dog that she calls WayWoof. No-one can see him, and because of his awful smell everyone assumes it must be Lily! To top it all, the family has been moved to the far, far north of Scotland and Lily will never get to see her friends again...
The Sisters of Hiss live on a mountain named Ben Screeeiiighe in a house so hidden that on-one has ever heard of it. The sisters are four hundred years old and have, in their time managed to get up to a lot of mischief. The night on which we meet them is a perfect night for witchcraft and the sisters have decided that they would like a witch baby. They find Daisy. Daisy is the only baby who is not afraid of them; she is the perfect candidate for their dastardly plans. What the witches don’t anticipate is Lily, born under a blue moon, Lily is special. Even less so do they anticipate Vivaldi, but she comes later...
‘Witch Baby and Me’ is the first title in Debi Gliori’s wonderful new series for younger readers. Well known for the Pure Dead and Pure Brilliant books, Gliori has turned her witchy story writing skills to a younger age group with huge success. The book is well written and the story flows well, balancing humour with a sprinkling of magic and a touch of reality to create an almost believable story. The welcome addition of some lovely pen and ink illustration, playful fonts and short snappy chapters make this the perfect reading book for young fans of humour, fantasy and magic.
‘Witch Baby and Me’ is a sparky, current and clever book with a wide appeal. It is an easy read and one that I highly recommend. I am very much looking forward to finding out how the story develops...
