I’m going to the beach. I’ve got my goggles and snorkel, my bucket and spade, my flippers and trunks and my big yellow float. The character in this story has no name but he takes the reader with him on a trip to the beach. Making sure that he has everything he needs, he travels not only to the beach but up into the sky in an aeroplane and even a helicopter, out into the ocean on a boat and a tanker, across the fields in a truck and though the desert on a camel. The reader is transported on a journey to the beach and home, but there is a special twist to the story, one that is not revealed until the very last page!
Thomas Docherty enjoys creating simple picturebooks that encourage the reader to enjoy the illustration and embellish the story with their own ideas. He creates a wonderful sense of each of the different place visited by varying the colour he uses and clearly showing the important elements of each scene in his bold and bright pictures. Flow and movement encourage the turn of the pages andit is easy to imagine the wind in the hair or the sand under feet..
‘To the Beach’ is a great concept and a lovely simple story.
