The Fire Eternal

Synopsis: Five years have passed since David Rain, now a cult author, disappeared mysteriously in the Arctic. Life in Wayward Crescent has settled to relative normality. But as the weather grows wild and the ice caps melt, all eyes turn north, where bears and the souls if the Inuit dead are combining to produce a spectacular solution ... a solution with its focus on David's child, Alexa - if the agents of evil do't reach her first.

Review: This is the fourth title in the series about David Rain that combines fantasy with a serious environmental message about the melting of the Polar ice caps. Although that message is clear and familiar the fantasy element of this book is harder to grasp if read without the context of the previous titles. There are a lot of characters – many of them small dragons with similar names - and a complex history and mythology. Trying to master all this can be frustrating and involve much referring back to earlier parts of the text.

However, the writing is impressive. D’Lacey has created a vast world in both time and space which encompasses dragons, polar bears, magic, a malevolent alien life form and a stroppy teenager. A challenging read, probably more fully enjoyed and appreciated if read as part of the series.
