The sequel to 'Exodus', this book continues Mara's story as she flees the cruelty of the sky cities to find a new homeland for the refugees of earth, in the now melting ice-lands in the north. With a growing band of friends and supporters, but also a heart-rending list of lost companions, Mara's struggle is every bit as absorbing in this second book as it was in the first. I found this book less engaging than its preqeul for a number of reason: iseems to have been aimed at a slightly older audience - Mara's love affair with two of her companions, and her subsequent pregnancy, almost lifts the book into the category of teen fiction. On the other hand, the issues the book explores seem to be less complex and less innovative and more generalised than in the prequel. Nevertheless, the story was engaging and I look forward to reading the third book, when it comes out.
