Two by Two and a half

Synopsis: The nursery class is all lined up in twos and ready to go out with Miss Moo Hoo. Little Bat Jack is on his own at the back, but he doesn’t mind. As they walk through the woods, they hear, feel and see some rather unusual things… What on earth can they possibly be?

Review: Miss Moo Hoo has her nursery class all lined up in twos, as they get ready for an adventurous walk in the woods, all except for Little Jack Bat, who bravely volunteers to walk all by himself. Walking in the woods is fun especially as Miss Moo Hoo and her young charges imagine all sorts of wonderful animals and creatures. Parents and little readers will love the story and the bright, colourful illustrations!

This is a heart-warming story with plenty of surprises; we have re-read it many times. The story consists of playful text and a catchy refrain, Little Bat Jack proves that all the best things come in small packages. David Melling’s bright, busy picturebook is full of intricate detail. This is a gloriously detailed book that will be a joy to return to again and again. There is minimal text and big, busy pages. David Melling has used some poetic devices, which the children might use as a stimulus for their own poetic writing. All young children will enjoy joining in the repetitive element: ‘Follow the leader, follow the path, Two by two and a half’ Some children will also enjoy predicting the language.  The book reads very well aloud and would be a good bedtime story andit  is also suited to  a guided/group reading. ! The story can also be used to generate classroom talk and discussion.
