Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

Pigeon dreams of being a bus driver. When a big shiny bus is parked nearby he thinks his moment has finally arrived. But the driver has trusted you, the reader, to make sure that the pigeon doesn't get behind the wheel. Can you resist the pigeon's wheedles, charms and tantrums and keep the bus safe until the driver returns?

This book is a delight for readers of any age. The bus driver and pigeon address the reader directly through the use of speech bubbles. The pigeon insists that you let him drive the bus using persuasion ("C'mon, just to the corner and back!"), bribery ("How 'bout I give you a fiver?") and challenge ("I bet your mum would let me!") - none of which will work!

The pigeon is beautifully characterised through simple line drawings that capture the pigeon's increasingly frustrated attempts to get you to change your mind. Children listening to the story play their role with ease and take great delight in thwarting the pigeon's repeated requests with enthusiastic "No!"s.

The book is perfectly paced, pages without words give time to focus on the pigeon's mood as he contemplates his next move or wallows in his misery. The book could be linked to PSHE and discussion of feelings of frustration, anger and disappointment or it can simply be enjoyed as a perfect book to read aloud.
