When just a single pea touches the lips of this determined vegatable hater, he dosen't cry, whine, or refuse to swallow. He turns into a VEGGIE MONSTER! Ready to smash the chairs! Ready to tip the table! Ready to...GULP...down his peas? This wry and funny story by George McClements is the perfect antidote to dinnertime drama, and it may even inspire a few veggie monsters out there to give peas a chance.
Review This is indeed a funny book: the large illustrations are funny and the sparse text is funny. The word play is funny from the acknowledgement to "my sweet peas" to the blurb illustration of the veggie hater reading a copy of "War and Peas"
The story follows a normal Tuesday evening in the hero's home when he again has to suffer the trauma of eating his quite small portion (three actually) of peas. The tale will be familiar, if SLIGHTLY exaggerated, to many veggie monsters and their parents. There is easily accessible irony in text and illustrations on every page. The story is far from simple however because whatever the outcome with the peas, tomorrow is another day and Wednesday means broccoli!
