Here is a novel and clever idea for encouraging young children to read together. Fun on the Farm is in effect two books in one. The main body of the book about mother hen and her chick is a strong board book from which a cut out of its smaller counterpart links nicely to the text. The story is told in simple rhyme as follows;
My mummy wakes
Me up each day.
Soon it’s breakfast Time –
hoorray!
After the reader has read the main verse, little hands can turn the page of the mini cut out book at the base to reveal little chick pecking on the corn, which places him beside his mother.
Page 2 is bright green, scattered with music notes, honey bees flowers and the verse is; Then in the yard We stroll around. We make a noisy clucking sound! Again small hands turn the bottom book page to reveal little chick singing gaily beside his mother.
The remaining five pages are a diary of baby chick’s day and all his does with his mother.
Fun on the Farm is not only unusual in design but an imaginative tool. It encourages children to match up the correct pages both in colour and content, thus ensuring full participation in the story. Also it’s designed to withstand a lot of wear and tear, so would fit nicely in nursery/ schools for pair work. The beauty of this book is the simplicity of the design which is often the case; no swirling discs, pop ups or flaps to be ripped or ruined, just a heavy duty well designed board book... Fun on the Farm is just a straightforward book offering two for one.
This is a fun idea and would be an excellent asset to any bookshelf for babies and toddlers.
