Synopsis: Happy faces, sad faces, angry faces - a range of different expessions are all to be found in this book.
Review This is a very simple book, with one word on each double page and very minimal illustrations. Different feelings are depicted; the left hand page showing facial features and the right hand page a scenario. This works better on some pages more than on others. “Tired” is illustrated by a yawning mouth and a little girl climbing the stairs, while “shy” has three U shapes depicting eyes and mouth, probably a little subtle for a young child. The colours of the pages are well thought out, for example, pink for shy, red for angry and green for jealous, and a nice touch is that the faces show a variety of ethnic backgrounds. As some of the illustrations aren’t very obvious, this is a book to be used as a basis for talking to young children about feelings. While the book clearly has a place, I wouldn’t consider it to be one of Jan Pienkowski’s better books.
