Babies can learn all about themselves by exploring this attractive board book. ‘You are big, I am small.’ begins each page of this book designed to be ‘A baby’s guide to what babies need to know’. Each double-spread contains a photograph and text which focuses on a different aspect of being a baby, e.g. emotions, the senses, sleep.
In this large board book it is the beautiful black and white photographs of the babies which dominate. These are supported by written text that follows a repetitive pattern, a feature which is both reassuring for young children and crucial in developing knowledge of speech patterns.
Scribblers produce a number of books along this line and seem to be marketing themselves alongside the likes of Baby Einstein. For example, the blurb contains some useful parental guidance about the importance of sharing books from a young age and the role of repetitive text in developing language, suggesting they are focused upon highlighting the significant role of books in early childhood. This is all to the good and the book certainly sits comfortably alongside its competitors.
