A little squeaky mouse comes running across the page and hides himself inside the ‘foldy bit’ in the middle of the book. He’s hiding from someone…will Kipper help him? Kipper is sitting on the opening page of the book, wondering ‘what sort of a book it would turn out to be,’ when he is interrupted by a mouse which runs across the page and literally hides in the book’s gutter (the foldy bit in the middle of the book). It seems he is hiding from a cat and so Kipper, ever helpful, is keen to protect him…but does he need to?
This book has been specially written to celebrate Kipper’s eighteenth birthday and it delights in the usual fashion. The opening page is a real gripper and Kipper is on typical form; friendly and entertaining. As ever humour is present, with the mouse’s editorial comments on the frontispiece making for an amusing start to the story. Also, there is something about Mick Inkpen’s illustrations which cannot fail but bring a smile to my face. He is just so good at capturing facial expressions. So all in all, this makes for another joyful piece from this classy writer for the very young
