every morning the day dreaming Daisy Dawson swings down the lane on her way to Nettlegreen Primary School and every morning Daisy Dawson is late! Why? because she stops to say hello to all the animals on her way. So imagine her surprise when the animals start to talk back…
When Daisy spots a beautiful yellow butterfly trapped in a spider’s web and the spider making its way towards its prey she stops to set it free, this act of kindness earns Daisy a very special gift and before long she realises that she can understand the singing of the birds around her. However, it is not until her friend the dog actually talks to her that a very stunned Daisy begins to realise what a special gift she has been given. Obviously Daisy is yet again late for school but there are all sorts of scrapes waiting for her as she talks to the class hamsters, helps out a lost ant and inadvertently seems to be speaking very rudely to the headmaster.
However, this is nothing compared to the adventure that Daisy and her friends are about to embark on when they set out on a mission to rescue Boom the dog from the clutches of the dog warden. The combination of Steve Voake’s story telling skills and Jessica Meserve’s black and white pencil sketches create a gentle, heart-warming and easy to read story perfect for animal and adventure loving readers looking for something a little out of the ordinary.
Steve Voake’s lyrical flowing text is light, easy to read, fast paced without being too action packed and full of twists and turns. He is a wonderful storyteller who draws the audience in and keeps them hooked from the start. His writing is perfectly complemented by the artistic style of Jessica Meserve who has created some beautiful images of Daisy and her animal friends that are gentle, warm and detailed. They bring an additional level of detail to the story and give the reader another layer to consider.
