This book is an effective introduction to the genre of political thriller, a place filled in the adult world of fiction by the likes of James Patterson. Oisin McGann gets the reader involved right from the start through his instantly recognisable urban settings and detailed, well-developed characters.
The plot involves two central characters of Amina, a student who is desperate to become a ‘big time’ journalist , and Ivor who served in the war in Sinnostan and suffered serious injuries. Over time however, he suffers flashbacks which lead him to believe that the memories he has of the incident may not entirely be true. While there are parallels to the situation in Iraq or Afghanistan, this only allows the reader to be further immersed in the story. Amina and Ivor find themselves coming up against shadowy organisations within government and the armed forces that will stop at nothing to ensure that their agenda of conspiracy and subterfuge is not being disrupted or hindered.
This is a book for older teenagers and there is swearing and some fairly shocking scenes. However, taken in context, this helps to create a pacy, tension filled thriller, which keeps the reader guessing as to how the story will end and if all the characters will make it , right to the last page.
