The 13 Clocks

This is an incredibly funny and engaging story; a traditionally witty fairy-tale spoof with one of the most endearing trickster figures I have encountered. As the introduction by Neil Gaiman suggests, this is a story that adults and children alike will enjoy; it is for all ages and it will stay with you for a long time. Perhaps what I liked best about it was the wonderful use of language, which is sharp and sparkling; twisting meanings and connotations in a funny and challenging way that is perfect for 'growing' readers.

On the downside, I was not at all taken with the illustrations in this particular volume, which to me looked like nothing more than cheap PC clip-art. It is even more disappointing to learn that these illustrations were the originals comminssed by the author from a personal friend. Still, for those who like that particular style of art, the volume is well-presented and would make a good present, and equally good classroom reading. Short and fun, I  highly recommend it.
