Breaker

After moving to North Berwick, twins, Tom and Beth meet Professor MacBlain who brings mystery, adventure and danger to what had originally appeared to be a drab and boring new place to live. But is there another side to the Professor, thief or saviour of the environment. Tom and Beth have a difficult decision to make. Do they help the Professor and hopefully save the environment or betray him?

From the introduction, this adventure moves along at a good pace. By creating a home that is in turmoil due to renovations, the author has produced a situation whereby the main charactesr are forced to find things to amuse them outside their home. Here the adventure begins when the twins accidently attend the wrong environmental meeting and encounter the Professor and his inventions. It is after this meeting that they are recruited by the Professor to unwittingly aid him in protecting a mysterious device he is reluctant to explain. The need to help the Professor is heightened by the appearance of two sinister men and an environmental disaster.

Running along side this adventure is another story, of the twins trying to fit in with the children who have lived in North Berwick for a long time and settle in at a new school. These two stories come together when the twins have to call on their new friends help. By setting this well paced adventure story in a real life environment Annemarie Allan adds an extra dimension for the reader.
