Crystal is a teenage mum in despair. Her mum's bitter, her step-dad's violent and her sister and friends are too busy enjoying themselves to notice that Crystal isn't coping. Can't any one see the dark tragedy that's unfolding? Her only hope is Grace next door.
Set in South Africa, this is a raw, stripped-back account of the very worst extremes of teenage life. Crystal's story is recounted by Grace, her next door neighbour and friend of Crystal's out of control younger sister. Grace has her own issues surrounding her relationship with her foster mother, yet is drawn to Crystal and her baby Ricardo.
This is a harrowing story that deals with very adult themes; the ending especially is quite horrific. Nonetheless, the author handles the themes sensitively and without glamourisation or overplay. With large print and under 250 pages, may suit young adult reluctant/struggling readers.
