Review: With fast paced action scenes worthy of James Bond or Alex Rider this is an enthralling story. Though the second in The Joshua Files series, it reads well without the first. The plot has satisfying depth and complexity but is not made unwieldy by referencing Josh’s previous adventure. From cryptic puzzles and intriguing Mayan mysteries to vicious baddies and gripping chases through underground labyrinths, down mountains and through the dark streets of Oxford, this is a first-rate read. The vivid yellow plastic cover may even help to lure in those reluctant readers. With the added emotional appeal of a prospective romance, a feisty female to share some of Josh’s adventures and a narrative that effectively captures the diverse settings, this was an unexpected pleasure.
