Sophie and the Locust Curse

Synopsis:The book is a wonderful African adventure story featuring the brave girl Sophie and her friend Gidaado the Fourth and his albino camel Chobbal. Together they fight a terrifying army of locusts, go camel racing and unexpectedly become musical celebrities in the process!

Review: Stephen Davies’ latest exciting adventure story is set in Africa where a terrifying army of locusts is making its way along the edge of the Sahara desert, devastating crops in one village after another. Gidaado's village is next. When the locusts arrive Gidaado is forced to take on a humiliating new job in order to survive. He becomes a crier, announcing local news including descriptions of missing cows! With his friend Sophie's help, Gidaado's lost cow songs become great hits.

This is a very unusual short novel, by turns amusing and exciting. The author also packs in a surprising amount of information about African culture, though this never interferes with the fast pace of storytelling. Stephen Davies is a missionary in West Africa so he knows what he is writing about, and one gets the sense that he is immensely appreciative and respectful of African traditions.

This book will appeal to a wider range of young readers than you might at first imagine.
