THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE: WEST YORKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE

Adrian Mitchell’s adaptation of the C.S. Lewis much-loved, “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” tells of four children, evacuated to a large country house in World War Two. Via a highly unusual route they find themselves in Narnia - a place of magic- where the evil White Witch must be defeated, to release the inhabitants from the spell of eternal winter.

Ian Brown has directed a spectacular “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and Ruari Murchison’s interiors and exteriors shine with magnificent simplicity, allowing the magic of the story to provide the wonder. A fantastic white double-staircase takes us to several sites in the story and a backdrop of giant coats ushers in other changes. Mic Pool’s wraparound sound effects and images of war, evacuation, freezing and melting are a perfect complement to the action on stage.

Dance, music and song fuse superbly in this production, which boasts new arrangements for the songs and completely different orchestration than when it was first brought to Leeds. Under Jonathan Gill’s direction, the band consistently produces gorgeously, delicate imagery ranging from perky tunes to haunting melodies.

Clare Foster is splendid in the role of the White Witch. All elegance, spite and evil, she finds more than her match in Louis Decosta Johnson’s majestic Aslan. Powerful voice and movements radiate strength and his dialogue slips effortlessly into song. David McGranaghan’s Morgren is a wicked, leaping, tumbling delight. Long leather coat and werewolf locks considerably enhance his standing as secret policeman.

This production is back by popular demand and can once again be loved and adored by adults and children alike until February 2nd. (Suitable for all adventurers aged 6 and above.)
