Avoiding Drugs

Synopsis: Do you know how medicines should be taken? What nicotine does? How to avoid harmful drugs? Read this book to discover the answers.

Review: This simple paperback reader, with powerful photographs, gives pupils a clear understanding of the difference between drugs that help us and drugs that are non-medicinal. It could be used with quite young pupils, as the language is accessible and the ideas important. Older pupils with special needs would also value this book, as it is written in a non-patronising manner. The book is in the Pull Ahead-Health series, which includes titles such as ‘Eating Well’, ‘Killing Germs’ and ‘Playing Safely’. Although this was originally an American book, it is not immediately obvious from the illustrations or text. The pages on alcohol abuse strongly communicate the way in which alcohol ‘changes how people feel and act.’ The book helpfully summarises key points at the end, and also includes, in dialogue form, how to respond to people who ask you to try drugs. Suggested websites and a glossary are also added. This is a very helpful book and is a calm way into discussing drug abuse with primary school pupils and pupils with special needs.
