Archie's War by Marcia Williams is a fictionalised autobiographical scrapbook charting the fortunes of the Albright family during the war years 1914- 1918. The story is presented through the eyes of Archie Albright, who is ten years old at the outset of the war.
In the classroom context, Archie's War might be used to support a unit of work on Biography/Autobiography, cross-curricular work on the First World War or as part of a significant author study featuring author/illustrator Marcia Williams. It is also well suited to guided reading with pupils in years 5 and 6 as it provides opportunities to develop inference as well as stimulating discussion about universal themes of war, peace, tolerance, conflict, resolution, families, patriotism and pacifism.
We have produced teachers' notes and a set of reading prompts to support wither group or guided reading.
