Coming to Tea

Join mum and the children as they invite the family next door to tea. But will the weather spoil the party?

Coming to Tea forms part of a series of picture books by Sarah Garland which depict aspects of everyday family life. Here the central family have invited the next door neighbours round for tea and we are witness to the preparations, the tea party itself, a downpour and a reassuringly cosy ending.

Young readers will enjoy the animal antics and I imagine anyone with a young family will appreciate this humorous and warm-hearted portrayal of a busy afternoon. This is a straightforward book with a basic storyline which can be followed by the very young. There is plenty to look at and although the text is simple, the illustrations speak volumes. The children in particular are wonderfully expressive, their boredom and excitement is clearly written on their faces.

This book is a re-issue originally published in the 1980s and at first glance might be viewed as old-fashioned or as representing an unrealistically romantic portrayal of family life. I found myself wondering, does it really reflect the kinds of activities which families engage in today? Sadly, some children might not experience baking tarts with their mum or a tea party. However, the role of community, quality time with friends and sharing a meal together surely remains timeless and of significance? So, worth a look I think.
