Cybernation

Thousands of years ago a massive comet plunged Clandoi into darkness. It now exists frozen without sun or stars or memory. Clandoi is getting colder and life is getting harder. Solly is a wayfarer, the lowest caste on the planet, and Lalune, his childhood friend, a rich Applaoosian. Their friendship is forbidden. Deceived, Lalune is now trapped in the sinister cyber clinic that harvests her body parts, and Solly’s parents have been arrested to face the same fate. Only Solly can rescue them. First he must fulfil a prophecy and save the planet from an icy death. Cyber nation is about two journeys of discovery. Solly makes an outward journey across Clandoi’s weird, half-lit world to find a mysterious Key of Being. Nothing can prepare Solly for his encounter with a Janus Tree that tries to steal his soul or the Pruppas, animated, talking fungi and shepherds to other fungus, like the skyboat.

Meanwhile Lalune finds herself actually in the Bubblenet. Hers is an inward journey looking out from the inside of a computer screen. She uncovers the horrifying truth about the cyber clinic and the way Applaoosians treat Wayfarers. Lalune must somehow wake up. It is a story that is an emotional rollercoaster. Solly and Lalune are bound by a deep friendship, which Erica Blaney’s writing makes palpable.

The story moves from feelings of uncertainty, loss and misery to moments of knowledge that are both dreadful and fearful. Throughout there is hope and optimism in promises made. Erica Blaney also tells a compelling story about an alien world and an alien way of life from the two different perspectives of Solly and Lalune. These are cleverly woven together to bring the story to an exciting climax.

Cybernation is the first in a two-part adventure for readers aged 11 years plus. It is an exciting new world for readers to explore.
