Ben is a fearless young boy who spends all his days gallantly defending his big sister from mouldy green ghosts, slime-burping monsters and wild beasts. But when darkness descends, Ben no longer feels quite so brave, he realises that is his sister who does all the protecting.
‘The Wildest Brother’ is a perfect story for wild brothers and sisters at bedtime. It may not settle them straightaway and it is probably best to ensure that the wild brother is actually younger to ensure that arguments do not begin, but it is a great story for siblings to share with one another and their parents. Ben is a very brave brother; he defends his sister from all manner of dangers, monsters, grisly green ghouls, a slime-bursting beastie, burglars, foxes and even wolves. Ben is busy every day of the week ensuring that his sister is free from danger, he is a modern knight in shining armour and he is proud of all the work he does, but it is at night-time when it is dark that Anna has to take on the role of protector.
The illustration in this book is a perfect complement to the simple text, bringing it to life and clearly showing the reader exactly what it is that Ben has to do in order to save Anna from all manner of dangers, on some pages there is just one illustration, on others there are lots of small ones. Set against the white background of the page, the watercolour sketches are bright and lively acting as a perfect complement to the simple and heart-warming story.
