Yuck!: Dirty Bertie

Synopsis - Dirtie Bertie is a small boy who has all the most disgusting habits you can think of, plus he's full of mad ideas and plans - so is very soon up to his ears in trouble... Review - This book contains three stories, each divided into 4 short chapters making this a very accessible book for a newly confident reader.

In 'Yuck!' Bertie rashly persuades his Gran and her friend Sherry to take him to the fair - and then is very put out to discover that even the scariest rides are enjoyed more by his Gran and Sherry than by him. Bertie's near escape from wearing a sailor suit for the Victorian day at school (he wrecks the suit to go as a beggar) nearly results in a minor riot as he sits outside the supermarket appearing to beg.

Then in the final story he, apparently unintentionally, teaches a famiy friend's baby to say their first word - Bum! Bertie is the naughty streak in every little boy, and as such, will have huge appeal to all similar little boys who will delight in, laugh at, and snigger with Bertie at the idiosyncracies of life which always seem to turn out worst for him.

The short descriptive paragraphs with lots of reported speech make these stories that move quickly and so create an easy reading experience full of fun. Each page has one of David Roberts distinctive black and white illustrations on it further highlighting the mess Dirty Bertie is causing.

Other titles include: Burp!, Pants!, Worms! and Fleas!
