Gilbert the Great

At last sympathy for the shark!

Gilbert the Great White Shark is inconsolable when he loses his lifelong friend, Raymond the Ramora. Eventually, after reflecting on the positive aspects of his time with Raymond, Gilbert discovers a new friendship and comes to terms with his loss.

A sensitive tale of lost love and friendship which would be helpful to children who might encounter such experiences in their lives at any level. The choice of characters is interesting in that it is based upon the real life symbiotic relationship between sharks and the much smaller ramonas. Whilst exploring the issues concerned with loss, at the same time there is factual educational information, related in a witty and amusing text with bold colourful illustrations which support the storyline extremely effectively. Gilbert is drawn as an extremely engaging character and his expressions of joy and sadness could be easily 'read' by all children. The extra bonus of any accompanying CD make this a doubly engaging package.
