The Wizard’s Promise is the climax of the Doomspell fantasy trilogy.
At the end of The Scent of Magic, all the world’s children’s magical powers were awakened. This has turned the world upside down: children are empowered whereas the unmagical adults are dependent. A few children loot and terrorise, but most use their gifts responsibly. “Spell-gifts were not evenly distributed” - children with weak magic are called feebles (compare muggles); some other children are thrill-seekers, and some are spectrums, who form a kind of early warning system.
For the Earth is again under threat, this time from the Griddas, ruthless creations of the High Witches. The Griddas are also intent on conquering the Wizards’ world of Orin Fen. They kidnap Yemi, whose innocence confounds them. They also trick Rachel and Eric into coming to their world, but Rachel is assisted by the living mountains, storm-whirls and snow of Ool, and Eric has his own plans. Eric becomes the focus, as he agonises over how to use his exceptional “fatal gift” to defeat the Griddas.
Followers of the Doomspell books will not be disappointed by The Wizard’s Promise. There are revelations and plot twists aplenty, and the choices about how to resolve the conflict are thought provoking.
