In the preface to this book Rai says he wanted to write something “fun and a bit silly”. Well he certainly achieved his aim because this book is great fun – but Rai does himself a disservice if he considers this book just a bit of silliness, because there is an important message hidden within the fun.
What happens when a teenage boy’s dream comes true and two of the fittest girls he knows both want him? Which one should he choose? Or should he try to have his cake and eat it? Well, obviously, the latter! And he has a great time – at first. Harj dates both Neeta and Kelly, getting the best of both worlds and huge respect from his mates. Until, inevitably, he goes to a party and both his girlfriends are there. Now what? Harj learns about truth and respect and what happens when you mess with other people’s feelings.
Unlike many books written for struggling readers this is genuinely suitable for older readers. Not patronising or condescending in any way, the language is simple and accessible but also totally genuine and appropriate. This is an excellent book – the light touch keeps the book readable without negating the importance of the themes it explores. The issues are universal and relevant to all teenagers – this is not an ‘Asian’ book even though several of the characters are Asian as you’d expect from Rai. They are all believable and real.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, suitable for everyone not just your reluctant readers – confident readers will be able to read it quickly but the discussion it will generate could go on for weeks.
