Miffy the Artist

Ever since Dick Bruna first created Miffy in 1955, she has endeared herself to generations of young children. She is now one of the best-loved children's characters of all time. In this charming new addition to her story, Miffy takes inspiration from a visit to an art gallery and decides to become an artist herself. Looking at the colour and shapes of the world around her she discovers what fun it can be to make pictures of the things she sees. By bedtime, her walls are full of all her wonderful artworks.

Dick Bruna's instantly recognisable graphic style will conjur feelings of nostalgia in those who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s. Simple shapes, black outlines and expansive white backgrounds may have fallen out of favour in the 1980s but Miffy the Artist has a simple, fresh appeal which will find new fans (young and old) in a climate where retro artwork is in vogue. Indeed there is something very pleasing about the friendly font, the illustration and text arrangement  on facing pages and the hardbacked square format. I especially liked space for writing 'This book belongs to ...... ' I've already filled mine in.

Delightful.
