Look What Feet Can Do

Synopsis Many animals use their feet in amazing ways. Some use their feet to catch food. Some can climb glass walls or walk on water. Other animals flirt, send messages or fight with their feet. Open this book to meet some fascinating feet.

Review The main reason to look at this book is the stunning wildlife photography. It's a slim volume but it contains over twenty colour photographs showing the ways in which animals use their feet. These uses include hunting, rearing young, travelling, eating and attracting a mate. The photographs are perfectly chosen to illustrate the accompanying text and therefore I think children could easily absorb the information here without adult supervision.

Nearly all the photographs are fascinating but the really incredible ones are the action shots. For example, under the section 'Deadly Feet', there is a shot of a hawk as it swops on prey in which you can clearly see just how deadly its feet are! Another great action shot shows a lizard 'water skiing' on its enormous feet.

The text is engaging and simple, without being patronising. There is a glossary, suggestions for further reading and recommended websites to find out more about certain animals. There is also an index so this volume could be used as part of a wider look at methods of gathering information from non-fiction.

Part of the 'Look What Animals Can Do' series, there are also titles available which cover mouths, tails and whiskers.
