Turn the pages of this board book and find the baby hiding in each shape. This attractive board book is based on a common theme of books for babies – that is babies. Each double spread contains written text along the lines of, ‘Peek, peek-a-boo! Maybe baby’s a little tiny bit star shaped today’, which is framed within the featured shape. This is complemented by a cute photograph of a baby also framed by the relevant shape. In addition, the final page (heart shaped) contains a slot where you can insert a photo of your own baby. This is a nice touch and a variation on the mirror which usually draws such books to a close. A key aim of the book, judging by the blurb, is to introduce babies to shapes. A possible strength of this book compared to others, is that it moves beyond the standard four you would expect, to introduce more complex shapes such as oval. Personally, I see no problem in immersing children in a range of shapes from a very young age. In addition, the pages are well presented and each page is a different colour, which conceptually may help the very young to start to differentiate between the shapes.
